Ubud Cycling Tour Guide | Routes, Bikes & Family Options
Cycling is one of the most enjoyable ways to discover the countryside around Ubud. However, not every cycling tour follows the same route or offers the same experience. Read the Complete Ubud Cycling Tour Guide.
Some cycling tours in Ubud may look attractive because of their low prices, but price should not be the only thing you consider. The route, traffic conditions, bicycle quality, guide assistance, and support available during the ride are just as important. Some tours may use busier roads, while others follow quieter village lanes and countryside paths. Before booking, take a moment to understand what the experience really includes. In this guide, I’ll explain what to look for and how to choose the right cycling tour in Ubud for you and your family.
What Is an Ubud Cycling Tour ?
An Ubud cycling tour is a guided bicycle experience through the countryside surrounding Ubud. Depending on the operator and route, the journey may include rice fields, traditional villages, temples, family compounds, plantations and scenic countryside roads.
A good tour offers more than simply riding a bicycle. A knowledgeable local guide can explain Balinese culture, village life, farming traditions and the Subak water-management system found throughout Bali’s agricultural landscape.
Tour duration, distance and terrain can vary considerably. Before booking, always check where the tour begins, how far you will cycle, whether the route includes hills and what type of support is available.
Different Types of cycling tours in ubud
Several types of cycling experiences are available around Ubud.
Village Cycling
Village cycling focuses on local culture and everyday Balinese life. These tours generally follow small countryside roads, farming tracks and rice-field paths. You may visit a traditional family compound, pass local temples, meet residents and learn about village customs. This option is suitable for travellers who prefer a slower and more personal cultural experience
Kintamani Downhill Cycling
Kintamani tours normally begin in the highlands near Mount Batur and descend towards the Ubud area. Because much of the route is downhill, the distance can be longer without requiring continuous pedalling. These tours often include a volcano viewpoint, plantations, villages and lunch. However, participants should be comfortable controlling their speed and braking for extended downhill sections.
These experiences concentrate on Bali’s agricultural landscape. A local guide may explain how irrigation channels, farmers, temples and community cooperation are connected through the traditional Subak system.

E-Bike Tours
E-bikes provide electrical assistance while pedalling. They are helpful for guests who want to cover a longer distance or reduce the effort required on uphill sections.
Always ask about the bicycle size, minimum rider height and level of assistance before booking.
Family Cycling Tour
A family cycling tour is designed around safety, comfort, and personal attention for children. It combines a Subak rice-field experience with traditional Balinese village life along an approximately 10-kilometre route, usually completed in around two hours of cycling.
The journey includes several cultural and scenic stops, with no pressure to rush. Pickup time, riding pace, rest breaks, and stopping points can be adjusted to suit each family’s needs.
A caring local guide stays close to the children throughout the experience, while a support vehicle provides assistance on accessible sections of the route if anyone becomes tired. The goal is simple: to help every family enjoy Ubud safely, comfortably, and at their own pace.
Ubud Cycling Tour Guide : Village Cycling vs Kintamani Downhill Cycling
Both experiences offer beautiful scenery, but they are designed for different interests.
Choose village cycling if you want to experience traditional communities, rice fields and local culture at a relaxed pace.
Choose Kintamani downhill cycling if you prefer a longer ride, mountain scenery and less uphill pedalling.
Neither option is automatically better. The right choice depends on what you want to experience and how comfortable you feel on a bicycle.
Regular Bike or E-Bike ubud?
A regular mountain bike provides a more traditional cycling experience. It is generally suitable for riders who are comfortable with gentle hills and mixed road surfaces.
An e-bike provides additional assistance and can make uphill sections easier. It may be a good choice for:
- Guests with lower fitness levels
- Riders with mild knee or joint discomfort
- Couples with different fitness levels
- Guests who prefer a less physically demanding journey
- Riders who want to cover a longer distance
An e-bike still requires balance, braking and bicycle control. Electrical assistance does not replace basic cycling ability.
Families travelling with toddlers should also ask whether a child seat can be attached to an e-bike. On our tours, child seats can only be fitted to regular mountain bikes, not e-bikes.
Private Tour or Shared Group?
A shared tour is usually more affordable and gives you an opportunity to meet other travellers. However, the group must generally follow one schedule and maintain a similar pace.
A private tour offers more flexibility. It allows your guide to adjust the pace, rest stops and level of assistance according to your group.
Private tours are especially useful for:
- Families with children
- First-time recreational riders
- Couples with different fitness levels
- Guests who enjoy taking photographs
- Travellers who want more cultural explanations
- Groups that prefer a flexible starting time
- Anyone who does not want to feel rushed
Before booking, ask whether “private” means a private guide, private transport and a completely private cycling group.
Choosing a Tour With Children
When booking a cycling experience with children, do not choose a bicycle based only on age. Height, riding experience and confidence are also important.
A general guide is:
- Toddlers up to approximately five years: child seat
- Children approximately five to seven years: small bicycle, depending on height and ability
- Children approximately eight to twelve years: kids’ mountain bike
- Teenagers: youth or adult mountain bike, depending on height
Children should be allowed to try their bicycles before departure. The guide can then check the seat height, helmet fit, braking ability and confidence of each child.
Parents should also ask:
- Are children’s helmets available?
- Can the child try the bicycle first?
- What happens if the child becomes tired?
- Is a support vehicle available?
- Does the route use busy main roads?
- Can the distance or pace be adjusted?
- Which sections cannot be reached by the support vehicle?
Our kids’ bike or child seat guide can help you select the most appropriate option.
Route Distance, Terrain and Difficulty
Do not assume that every tour in Ubud is completely downhill. Ask for an honest description of the distance, climbing, road surface and traffic conditions.
Our private route is approximately 10 kilometres and normally takes around two hours of cycling. With cultural stops, explanations, photographs and breaks, the complete activity generally lasts between two and three hours.
The terrain is approximately:
- 50% flat
- 25% gentle downhill
- 25% manageable uphill
The surface combines village roads, gravel farming tracks, rice-field paths and a light off-road section. Riders may slow down, take a break or walk their bicycles whenever necessary.
The route avoids busy main roads whenever possible, although occasional local scooters, cars and farming vehicles may still be present.
See our complete Ubud cycling route for detailed information about distance, terrain and village stops.
Morning or Afternoon Departure?
Morning departures are popular because temperatures are generally cooler and village life is already active. Morning tours also leave enough time for lunch and other afternoon activities.
Afternoon cycling can offer softer light, a quieter atmosphere and beautiful countryside views. However, the tour must be planned carefully so it finishes before dark.
Choose a morning tour if you:
- Prefer cooler conditions
- Are travelling with young children
- Want lunch after cycling
- Have other afternoon plans
- Prefer more time flexibility
Choose an afternoon tour if you:
- Have morning activities
- Enjoy warm golden light
- Prefer a later starting time
- Want a quieter end to the day
Weather in Bali can change quickly during any season. A responsible operator should explain what happens during light or heavy rain.
