Where Does the Cycling Route Begin?

The cycling experience begins in the countryside around Banjar Begawan, north of central Ubud.

Before starting, your guide will help each participant select the correct bicycle and helmet. Children can take a short trial ride so the guide can check their confidence, bicycle size, and comfort.

Your guide will then provide a safety briefing and explain the terrain ahead. Because every experience is private, there is no pressure to start before everyone feels ready.

From the meeting point, the route continues through villages and agricultural landscapes away from the busiest parts of Ubud.

What Is the Terrain Like?

Ubud is located in a naturally hilly area, so describing the route as completely flat or entirely downhill would not be accurate.

Our route consists approximately of:

  • 50% flat village roads
  • 25% gentle downhill sections
  • 25% manageable uphill sections

Most guests can complete the route using a regular mountain bike. The flat sections provide time to relax and enjoy the landscape, while the gentle downhill sections make parts of the journey smooth and effortless.

There are also several uphill sections. These are generally short and manageable, but guests are always welcome to slow down, stop for a break, or walk their bicycle when necessary.

An e-bike may be helpful for guests with knee problems, joint discomfort, lower fitness levels, or anyone who would prefer additional assistance on the uphill sections.

Quiet Balinese Village Roads

A large part of the route follows narrow village roads with minimal traffic.

These roads pass local homes, family temples, small farms, community areas, and places where residents carry out their daily activities. You may see children going to school, families preparing offerings, farmers transporting crops, or local people gathering at the banjar.

Cycling slowly allows you to notice details that are easily missed when travelling by car.

Our guides were born and raised in the surrounding area. They understand the roads, local customs, and daily rhythm of the villages. They can also explain what you see along the journey and help your group pass through the community respectfully.

Cycling Through Rice Fields and Subak Landscapes

Rice fields are one of the main highlights of the Ubud cycling route.

Depending on the agricultural season, the fields may be newly planted, filled with young green rice, approaching harvest, or being prepared for the next growing cycle. Every stage offers a different view of Bali’s working countryside.

The route also passes parts of the traditional Subak irrigation landscape. Subak is more than a network of water channels. It is a cooperative system through which farmers share water, coordinate agricultural activities, and maintain a relationship between farming, community, and spirituality.

Your local guide can explain how water moves between the fields and why this traditional system remains important to Balinese agriculture.

Traditional Village and Cultural Stops

The tour is not designed simply to cover a distance. We include stops that allow guests to understand the culture and daily life surrounding the route.

Depending on local conditions and activities, the journey may include:

  • Traditional Balinese villages
  • A Balinese family compound
  • Village or family temples
  • Subak rice fields and irrigation channels
  • Local farms and tropical plants
  • A traditional honey farm
  • Opportunities to meet local residents
  • Scenic countryside viewpoints

Some stops may vary because these are living villages rather than staged tourist attractions. Ceremonies, agricultural activities, road conditions, and weather can influence the exact experience on the day.

This flexibility helps keep the journey authentic.

NOT JUST RIDE

Is There an Off-Road Section?

Yes. The route includes one short and relatively easy off-road section.

The surface may be slightly uneven, especially following rain. Your guide will assess the conditions and explain the safest way to pass through it.

There is no requirement to ride every section. If you feel unsure, you can get off the bicycle and walk for a short distance. Your guide will remain nearby to assist.

The aim is to help everyone enjoy the experience safely—not to test anyone’s cycling ability.

Is the Ubud Cycling Route Safe for Children?

The route has been carefully selected with families in mind, offering a relaxed way to explore Ubud by bicycle. It mainly avoids busy highways and follows quiet village roads, agricultural paths, and low-traffic countryside lanes.

Safety support includes:

  • Properly sized bicycles
  • Child seats for younger children
  • Children’s bicycles in different sizes
  • Helmets for every participant
  • A safety briefing before departure
  • A private local guide
  • A flexible family-friendly pace
  • Rest stops whenever required
  • A support vehicle on accessible roads

Children who plan to ride independently can try their bicycle before departure. The guide will consider their age, height, confidence, and ability before recommending the most comfortable option.

Because some rice-field and village paths are too narrow for a car, the support vehicle cannot follow directly beside the group during every part of the route. It remains available on roads it can safely access and can meet the group again at designated points.

What Happens If Someone Becomes Tired?

There is no need to complete the route without stopping.

Because the tour is private, your family can rest whenever necessary. If a child or adult becomes tired, we can stop in a safe location, provide time to recover, and adjust the pace.

On accessible parts of the route, a tired guest can continue in the support vehicle. They may also rejoin the cycling activity later when the terrain becomes more comfortable.

Guests can walk their bicycle on uphill, uneven, or slippery sections whenever they prefer. No one will be rushed or pressured to ride beyond their comfort level.

Can the Route Be Adjusted?

Yes. Every group has different needs, especially families travelling with children.

The regular cycling route is approximately 10 kilometres, but a shorter one- to two-hour experience may be arranged for families with very young children, guests with limited time, or participants who prefer a gentler journey.

The pace can also be adjusted during the tour. You can spend more time taking photographs, watching farmers, learning about village life, or resting beside the rice fields.

Our priority is not how quickly you finish. It is how comfortably and meaningfully you experience the journey.

Morning or Afternoon Cycling Route

Morning cycling generally offers cooler temperatures and active village life. Farmers may already be working in the fields, children may be travelling to school, and the countryside feels fresh and peaceful.

An afternoon tour offers warmer light and a different village atmosphere. However, the finishing time must be planned carefully so the group completes the cycling route before dark.

Weather in Bali can change quickly in any season. During light rain, we provide raincoats and may continue when conditions are safe. During heavy rain, the group will stop at a sheltered location and wait until conditions improve.
