What You’ll Experience on Our Ubud Cycling Tour
Our private Ubud cycling experience is designed to introduce you to the countryside, culture, and everyday life found beyond central Ubud. Cycling in Ubud offers a relaxed way to explore quiet village roads, rice fields, and local communities at your own pace.
Instead of rushing between tourist attractions, you will explore peaceful village roads at a comfortable pace. Along the way, you can cycle through Subak rice fields, visit a traditional Balinese family compound, meet local people, and observe how village life continues today.
This experience is suitable for couples, groups of friends, and families with children. Because every tour is private, we can adjust the pace, bicycles, rest stops, and level of assistance to suit your group.
What Makes Cycling in Ubud Special?
Our tour combines relaxed cycling with genuine cultural experiences beyond the busy centre of Ubud. Along the way, you may see farmers working in the fields, local families, and everyday village life. Your local guide will share simple stories about Balinese culture, farming, and the Subak irrigation system.
It is a relaxed way to enjoy cycling while also seeing the real side of Ubud.
Private Pickup From Your Hotel
Your experience begins with private pickup from your hotel.
Free pickup and drop-off are available from selected locations within the Ubud area. Transportation from other areas can also be arranged for an additional charge, depending on the distance.
A private vehicle means you do not need to wait for other groups or visit multiple hotels before beginning the tour.
Our usual morning schedule is:
- Hotel pickup between 7:30 AM – 8:30 AM
- Cycling starts between 8:30 AM -9:00 AM
- Approximately two to three hours of cycling
- Indonesian lunch after the ride
- Private transfer back to your hotel
An afternoon experience can also be arranged, subject to availability and weather conditions.
Meet Your Private Local Guide
When you arrive at the starting point, you will meet your private local cycling guide.
Before beginning the ride, the guide will explain the route, provide a safety briefing, and help each participant select a suitable bicycle.
Children can test their bicycles before departure. The saddle height and bicycle size can be adjusted whenever possible to make the ride more comfortable.
Your guide accompanies only your group, allowing you to cycle without feeling rushed by other participants.
Bicycles for Adults and Children
We prepare the equipment according to the number of participants, their ages, heights, and cycling abilities.
Available options include:
- Mountain bicycles for adults
- Mountain bicycles for teenagers
- Children’s bicycles in different sizes
- Child seats for toddlers
- Safety helmets for every participant
Please provide each child’s age and height when making a reservation. It is also helpful to tell us whether they cycle regularly or are still learning.
If a parent needs to carry a toddler, we normally prepare a regular mountain bicycle with a child seat.
Begin With a Comfortable Trial Ride
Before entering the main route, you will have time to test your bicycle.
This trial helps the guide check:
- Whether the bicycle size is suitable
- Whether the saddle is comfortable
- How confidently each child can ride
- Whether any adjustments are required
- Which family members may need extra assistance
If a child does not feel comfortable, we can discuss the safest available option before continuing.
The tour is not a race. Your comfort and safety are more important than cycling quickly.
Cycle Through Quiet Balinese Villages
This Ubud cycling experience takes you away from the busiest streets of central Ubud and into quieter countryside areas. Along the way, you will pass local homes, small temples, family compounds, farms, and village roads that remain part of everyday community life.
Depending on the time and local activities, you may see residents:
- Preparing religious offerings
- Working around their family compounds
- Travelling to the temple
- Caring for animals
- Working in the rice fields
- Harvesting seasonal crops
- Taking children to school
These are real villages rather than staged tourist attractions. We ask guests to respect residents, follow the guide’s instructions, and request permission before taking close photographs of local people.
Visit a Traditional Balinese Family Compound
One of the most meaningful stops is a visit to a traditional Balinese family compound.
A traditional Balinese home is different from a house containing every room under one roof. It usually consists of several separate buildings arranged around a central courtyard called a natah.
During the visit, your guide may explain the functions of:
- Merajan: The family temple
- Natah: The central courtyard
- Bale Daja: A pavilion in the sacred direction
- Bale Dangin: A pavilion commonly connected with ceremonies
- Bale Dauh: A family or guest pavilion
- Paon: The traditional kitchen
- Jineng: A traditional rice-storage building
The exact arrangement can differ between families. The visit provides a respectful introduction to Balinese architecture, family traditions, ceremonies, and daily life.
Explore the Subak Rice Fields
The route continues through agricultural landscapes managed through Bali’s traditional Subak system.
Subak is more than a series of irrigation channels. It is a community-based system through which farmers cooperate to distribute water, maintain waterways, organise agricultural activities, and support ceremonies connected to farming.
While cycling through the Subak rice fields, you may see:
- Irrigation water flowing between fields
- Farmers preparing the soil
- Young rice being planted
- Bright green rice plants
- Mature golden rice
- Farmers harvesting their crops
- Ducks feeding in recently harvested fields
- Small shrines connected to agriculture
Rice fields do not remain green throughout the year. Their appearance depends on the local planting and harvesting cycle. Neighbouring fields may even be at completely different stages.
Every stage shows an authentic part of Balinese agricultural life.
Meet Local Farmers and Village Residents
Cycling creates opportunities for natural interaction with the local community.
You may stop when your guide meets a farmer, notices an interesting activity, or has something meaningful to explain. Depending on the season and availability, you may learn about rice cultivation, coconuts, cacao, coffee, cloves, honeybees, or other village products.
These interactions cannot always be scheduled because residents are continuing their normal daily activities.
We never promise staged farming activities. What you experience depends on what is genuinely happening in the village on the day of your tour.
Enjoy a Varied Countryside Route
Ubud is located in a hilly area, so the route is not completely flat.
Our regular route consists of approximately:
- 50% flat sections
- 25% downhill sections
- 25% uphill sections
There is also one short, manageable off-road section. Guests who do not feel confident can get off their bicycles and walk while the guide assists them.
The guide can adjust the pace, add rest stops, and recommend walking whenever a section does not feel comfortable.
This makes the experience suitable for recreational cyclists and many beginners, provided they can maintain basic balance and control of their bicycle.
Stop Whenever Your Group Needs a Break
Because this is a private tour, your group can take breaks without worrying about delaying other guests.
You can stop to:
- Drink water
- Take photographs
- Rest after a climb
- Help a child regain confidence
- Observe farming activities
- Ask your guide questions
- Enjoy the countryside scenery
Some families enjoy cycling continuously, while others prefer frequent stops and cultural explanations. Your guide will adapt the experience according to your interests.
Finish With an Indonesian Lunch
After approximately two to three hours of cycling, you can relax and enjoy an Indonesian lunch in a peaceful countryside setting.
Menu choices may include:
- Nasi goreng
- Mie goreng
- Grilled chicken
- Fried chicken
- Grilled fish
- Vegetarian dishes
Drinking water is provided during the cycling experience.
Please inform us before the tour if anyone in your group has an allergy, vegetarian preference, or another dietary requirement. We will do our best to arrange a suitable meal.
A Flexible Experience for Families
Every family has a different level of cycling experience.
Some children ride bicycles regularly, while others may feel nervous on hills, off-road paths, or unfamiliar bicycles. Parents may also have different fitness levels or health considerations.
For this reason, our family experience includes:
- Private transportation
- A private guide
- Bicycles selected according to age and height
- A trial ride before departure
- A flexible cycling pace
- Additional rest stops when required
- Assistance on hills or difficult sections
- A support vehicle on accessible roads
- The option to walk short sections

What Happens When It Rains?
Weather in Bali can change quickly, including during the dry season.
Light rain does not always require the tour to stop. We provide raincoats, and cycling can usually continue when the route remains safe.
If heavy rain occurs:
- We stop in a safe and sheltered location
- We wait until the rain becomes lighter
- The guide checks the condition of the route
- We adjust the route when necessary
- We continue when it is safe and comfortable
The final decision is based on the actual weather and road conditions.

More Than a Bicycle Ride
Our Ubud cycling experience is not only about covering a certain distance.
It is about slowing down, meeting local people, understanding the Subak landscape, and discovering how Balinese families live beyond Ubud’s busy tourism centre.
The route may look slightly different each day. Farming activities, ceremonies, village life, weather, and rice-growing stages continually change. This is what makes the experience genuine.
I grew up around the villages and rice fields included in this experience. For me, cycling here is not simply an outdoor activity. It is a respectful way to introduce guests to our community, traditional family compounds, Subak farming, and everyday Balinese life.
Every family is different. Some children are experienced cyclists, while others need more time and assistance. This is why we keep the experience private and adjust the pace according to the comfort of each group.
